Early Settlement-1900

1802
  • Conrad Darr and Robert and William Ogle entered Section 28 of Milford Township
  • Matthew Richardson of Maryland entered the land of what is now known as Collinsville, and sold the first lot to Charles Collins, an English wagon-maker for whom the town was named
1803
  • Earliest known settlers
  • Darr and the two Ogles brought their families to Section 28 and subdivided the section
  • Daniel Kyger and his wife, Ann Teegarden Kyger, of Pennsylvania settled along the Four Mile Creek
  • ​Many of these settlers lived in poverty, having to travel fourteen miles to the nearest mill

1804
  • First sermon delivered in the township by a traveling Baptist preacher from South Carolina, last name Patterson

1805
  • Township established; now independent from St. Clair
  • Early settlers: Brown, Darr, Gard, Grimes, Hancock, Haynes, Hinsey, Irwin, Jones, Kennedy, Kreamer, Lytle, Lippencott, Marshall, Markle, McCleary, McMechan, McNeal, Ogle, Pughe, Reed, Richardson, Robinson, Rynearson, Scott, Simmons, Simpson, Steel, Stout, Taylor, Teegarden, Walters, Walden, Watters, White, Williams, and Young 
1806
  • First school made in the Darrtown area, with George Howard as the teacher. It was a log building with a clapboard roof, and was used for the next 25 years.
  • Darrtown cemetery laid out
  • A Baptist church in Darrtown is build as a log cabin, and preaching began there 
1810
  • Seven-Mile Presbyterian Church in Collinsville established
  • Darrtown United Methodist Church established
1814
  • Conrad Darr of Pennsylvania laid out Darrtown, naming it after himself
1816
  • Lane's Mill milling site established
1817
  • Abram Darr opened the tavern The Hitching Post
1818
  • First schoolhouse in Collinsville was established, which had a fireplace and brick chimney. The first schoolteacher was an Irish man named William Hewett, followed by William Simpson, Moses Dougherty, and William McMechan.

  • Darrtown town hall built and used for religious congregations
1830
  • Population 1,808

  • Somerville laid out by Jacob F. Rowe on Oct. 7
1832
  • Somerville mill built
  • Somerville incorporated, with Thomas Martin as the first mayor and Benjamin Hubbard as the first clerk
1834
  • Somerville Presbyterian Church erected
1835
  • Free-will Baptist Church organized in Somerville
1838 
  • Second schoolhouse in Collinsville built
1840
  • Population of 1,868
1843
  • Collinsville Methodist Episcopal Church organized, active until 1870
  • Somerville Presbyterian Church organized with Rev. Thomas Hughes
1845
  • Odd Fellows' Lodge, No. 54, Invincible, was organized ​
1846
  • The Myaamia people are forcibly removed from their land and relocated to Kansas
1848
  • Church organized in Darrtown by the New School Presbyterians and the first preachers came from Oxford
1861
  • Somerville was flooded by Seven-Mile
1876
  • Third schoolhouse built in Collinsville, a two-story brick building
1890
  • Population of 1,649
1896
  • The first rural delivery service in Ohio was established in Milford Township on October 1​
1899
  • Schuck family bought The Hitching Post
1900
  • Darrtown Telephone Company applied to county commissioners for a right-of-way to construct a line over the Hamilton and Richmond turnpike, from Hamilton, to Somerville, over the Oxford and Somerville turnpike, to Collinsville, over the Flenner turnpike, to Oxford, over the Oxford turnpike, and to Reily, by way of Woods Station
